The magneto-optical recording material (D) is mfd. in two main steps. The material substrate (2) is treated to produce a first layer (3) with a low Curie temp. and a second layer (4) with a high Curie. A magnetic field is then developed to magnetise the second magnetic layer in a fixed direction. The magneto-optical recording head has a lens (6) focussing a beam (5) of light onto the junction between the magnetic layers. A magnetic field generator (8) surrounds the lens. @(42pp Dwg.No.1/16)@.
