A non-woven fabric is made by forwarding a bundle of continuous filaments 38, see Fig. 1, under tension through a banding device 10 wherein they are aligned into parallel relationship as a ribbon, forming this ribbon into a diverging curtain of separated filaments, then overfeeding this curtain onto a receiving surface as it moves at right angles to the plane of the curtain thus forming the web. The banding device can comprise at least two non-parallel slots 18, and 22 with or without slot 20, covered by a plate (12) (see Fig. 2, not shown) so that streams of gas, e.g. air, passing through the slot align the filaments into the ribbon. The width of the ribbon can be regulated by adjustment of the air flow to the slots. Modifications of the shape and positions of the slots is illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, not shown. The spreading device 40 which forms the filaments into the curtain can have a slot 44 which subjects the ribbon to a gas stream of arcuate cross section. The spreading device has an impingement plate (48), see Fig. 6 not shown, which may be adjusted so as to vary the width of the web. The web width may also be varied by adjustment of the relative positions of the banding device spreader and receiving surface. The filaments can be drawn or undrawn, or a mixture thereof can be used. The filaments can be heat-set during drawing. The filaments can be drawn before or after banding the filaments into a ribbon. The filaments can have any electrostatic charges removed by D.C. eliminators 58. mounted on either side of the running filament, see Figs. 7-10 not shown. The filaments can be made from polyethylene terephthalate, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polycaprolactam, polypropylene, dry viscose, cellulose acetate, acrylics and heterofilaments of various compositions. The filaments can be crimped. Binder filaments of lower melting point can be present, e.g. polyethylene isophthalate terephthalate copolymer. The web can be heated to bond the filaments, e.g. using hot calendering super-calendering.</p> |
