A cooling shaft or spinning cell for melt spinning filaments comprises a first enclosing wall located within at least one other enclosing wall, each wall extending from a spinneret or its mounting in the direction of travel of the filaments at least to the end further from the spinneret of the zone in which the filaments solidify when melt spinning is in progress, the walls being permeable to air at least in the portion surrounding the zone in which the filaments solidify when melt spinning is in progress and there being a radial clearance between adjacent walls extending from the same spinneret. The first enclosing wall may be a tube of circular cross-section and the second enclosing wall may also be of circular cross-section. The first and second tubes may be coaxial. At least one common outer wall may surround the enclosing walls extending from each of a number of spinnerets or their mountings. The radial clearance between adjacent walls extending from the same spinneret may be in the range of from 1 to 5 cm. The filaments may be extruded downwardly and the walls may be permeable above, in and below the portions surrounding the zone in which the filaments solidify when melt spinning is in progress. When filaments are extruded downwardly the upper part of the walls may have a permeability differing from that in the lower part of the walls, at least in the portion of the walls surrounding the zone in which the filaments solidify. The walls may be constructed from wire gauze, perforated sheet metal or a textile fabric. Each aperture in the wire gauze tubular screens preferably has an area of 0À1 to 2 mm.<SP>2</SP>, advantageously 0À5 to 1 mm.<SP>2</SP>.</p> |
