The device comprises a toothed disc 4 for causing the pieces to pass individually along a predetermined path, and an electromagnetic detector 15 for recognizing and authenticating the pieces. The electromagnetic detector 15 is placed above the path of the pieces in order to detect the gap between the detector and the pieces, which varies with the thickness of the pieces. In addition, the detector is in an off-centre position with respect to said path, so that the surface of the magnetic field of the detector intersected by the piece depends on the diameter of the latter.
