Process for obtaining enrofloxacin having the chemical name 1-cyclopropyl-7-(4-ethyl-1-piperazinyl)-6-fluoro-1,4- dihydro-4-oxoquinolin-3-carboxylic acid of formula I, its addition salts with pharmaceutically acceptable acids and its hydrates, based on the reaction of 3-acetyl-1- cyclopropyl-7-chloro-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxoquinolein, of formula V, <IMAGE> with an excess of N-ethylpiperazine and subsequent oxidation of the reaction product. Enrofloxacin is a bactericidal agent of proven effectiveness in the veterinary field in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. <IMAGE>
