An insert 20 is supported in the cavity of a mould 70, 80 by means of insert supports 75, 76, 85 which allow the insert to move longitudinally to a predetermined position while plastic material is injection moulded around it. In the example the insert 20 is a medical lancet formed from stainless steel wire and it is sterilized and protected by plastics material e.g. P.V.C., polyethylene or polypropylene injected through a gate 88. The mould is shaped to form ribbed portions 15 with slots 16 formed by the insert supports 75, 76, 85. The pointed end 22 of the lancet 21 is enclosed by a cap section 30 which can be readily removed from the body section 11 by means of a reduced diameter portion 35.
