PURPOSE:To reduce manufacturing cost in obtaining the title compound by catalytically oxidizing an alkylbenzene with molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst in acetic acid as a solvent by recovering methyl acetate as a by-product, hydrolyzing methyl acetate without adding a catalyst to give acetic acid and reusing. CONSTITUTION:An alkylbenzene is catalytically oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of a bromine compound-containing catalyst in acetic acid as a solvent to give the objective compound. Methyl acetate as a by-product during the oxidation reaction is recovered as an aqueous solution, then a catalyst is added to the aqueous solution of methyl acetate. Then the aqueous solution of methyl acetate is heated to 80-160 deg.C, preferably 100-160 deg.C without adding a catalyst, methyl acetate in the aqueous solution hydrolyzed to form acetic acid. This acetic acid is recycled to the oxidation reaction solution and reused. The oxidation reaction is carried out usually at 160-260 deg.C under 4-50kg/cm<2>G. Methyl cellulose is used as preferably 2-25wt.% aqueous solution. |
