PURPOSE:To reduce manufacturing cost in obtaining the title compound by catalytically oxidizing an alkylbenzene with molecular oxygen in the presence of a bromine compound-containing catalyst in acetic acid as a solvent by recovering methyl acetate as a by-product, converting to acetic acid and reusing. CONSTITUTION:An alkylbenzene is catalytically oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of a bromine compound-containing catalyst in acetic acid as a solvent to give the objective compound. Methyl acetate as a by-product during the reaction is recovered as an aqueous solution, then a bromine compound (especially preferably hydrobromic acid) is added to the aqueous solution of methyl acetate. The amount of the bromine compound added is an amount to give 10-10,000 wt.ppm, preferably 100-10,000 wt.ppm on the aqueous solution of methyl acetate. Then the aqueous solution is heated to 60-160 deg.C, preferably 80-140 deg.C, methyl acetate in the aqueous solution is hydrolyzed to form acetic acid. This acetic acid is recycled to the reaction solution and reused. |
