METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DRYING A PAPER WEB IN A COATING MACHINE A method for drying a paper web in a coating machine, comprising the steps of guiding a paper web (W) that has been coated at one side or at both sides through the drying gap in a dryer unit or units (20, 20a, 22, 22a, 25, 25a), wherein the web is supported and dried by means of air jets (F) without contacting the dryer unit or units. Both the threading of the leader of the web (W) and the supporting and guiding of the full-width web (W) are carried out by web supporting and drying devices (10, 23, 24), wherein, at least in the area of the leader, most appropriately over the entire width of the web (W), air blowings (F) directed along the direction of running of the web (W) are employed. An apparatus for carrying out the method, includes one or more coating stations, a dryer or dryers (20, 20a, 22, 22a, 25, 25a) placed after a coating station and/or between subsequent coating stations, the dryer/dryers being either air jet dryers and/or combined infrared air jet web dryers through whose drying gap the web (W) is passed while being supported by air so as not to contact the dryers. In connection with the dryer units (20, 20a, 22, 22a, 25, 25a), a guide device or guide devices (10, 23, 24) which also support the web by air without contacting it is/are integrated, which operate(s) both for threading the leader of the web and for support and guidance for a full width web (W).
