PURPOSE: To produce the subject paper useful for a heat-resistant insulating paper, etc., by forming an aqueous slurry comprising solids consisting essentially of short fibers, etc., of poly(meta-phenylene isophthalamide) into a wet sheet using a paper machine having an inclined wire, drying the wet sheet and then calendering the dried sheet under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION: An aqueous slurry comprising solids consisting essentially of about 55 to about 75 wt.% of short fibers of poly(meta-phenylene isophthalamide) and about 25 to about 45 wt.-% of fibrids of the poly(meta-phenylene isophthalamide) is produced and the solid concentration of the slurry is regulated to about 0.005 to about 0.02 wt.% The resultant slurry is then formed into a wet sheet having 10-25 g/m2 basis weight at the time of drying using a paper machine having an inclined wire and the formed sheet is dried and then calendered between a hard surface roll and a resilient deformable roll by heating the hard surface roll at >=150 deg.C to produce the objective paper having 25-45μm thickness.
