The present invention provides for a system and a method for applying a sound track to cinematic film by means of a modulated laser beam. The method of writing sound track information on processed cinematic film having an emulsion layer on a substrate comprises the following steps. First, a laser is directed to apply to the emulsion a light beam of sufficient frequency, intensity, area and duration in order to vaporize at least a portion of the emulsion without damaging the substrate. Second, the light beam is passed through a mask which has a variable area for light transmission. Finally, the light transmission area of the mask is varied by means of an audio-frequency electric signal to generate an audio-sound track on the film with this sound track being readable by cinematic film projection equipment. |
