PURPOSE:To improve toughness and affinity for a living body by mixing a calcium phosphate compd. with an inorg. whisker forming component and carrying out sintering and slow cooling. CONSTITUTION:A calcium phosphate compd. having 1.65-1.75 atomic ratio of Ca to P, e.g., hydroxyapatite in the form of powder of 0.1-1,000mum particle size or granules of 0.1-3mm diameter is mixed with 0.5-95wt.% inorg. whisker forming component such as CaO and this mixture is sintered at 800-1,600 deg.C. Whiskers are deposited by the sintering and then prescribed intermediate layers are formed by slow cooling at 0.2-30 deg.C/min in cooling rate to obtain a ceramic material made of a composite sintered body consisting of calcium phosphate- based grains of 0.05.30mum grain size as a matrix, inorg. whiskers of 0.05-2,00mum major axis size, 0.05-100mum minor axis size and 1.2-100 aspect ratio as a dispersed body and intermediate layers of 0.005-3mum thickness contg. elements contained in the whiskers and/or grains and present between the whiskers and grains. |
