Joint assemblies are used in drainage pipework which carries aggressive liquids. The pipes are of concrete or reinforced concrete construction with a plastics lining. The joint may have a lever arm arrangement of a bolted coupling. Both types of joint utilise a spigot and socket joint and the plastic lining (8) extends to the full area of both spigot and socket of each pipe. The liner is integral with the pipe internal wall and is secured by lugs (50) set during mfr. A teflon sealing ring (48) is used in both types of joint. The spigot and socket section of the lever operated joint has a thickened lining section on matching faces to ensure fail-proof sealing on the hinged type joint a lever clamping arm is placed in a hinging point on the spigot end of the next pipe by means of a hooked section and the other end with a lever attachment has a pivot recess cast in the collar.
