Electronic controller for carbon filter for diesel engine - has programmed temperature control to burn off carbon

The action of the carbon filter is controlled by a microcomputor (30) which regulates the temperature of the filter w.r.t. the dynamic conditions of the engine. The programmed temperature is compared with the temperature of the exhaust gases leaving the engine, to operate an integral electric heating element if the temperature can be raised. This burns off the carbon without affecting engine performance. The control system has a failsafe mode to operate the burn-off at preset intervals when the automatic control has dropped out and an emergency system operates. ADVANTAGE - Efficient carbon burn-off without affecting peak torque demands.
