The invention concerns a drive for a machine tool with relative rotational motion between tool (12) and workpiece (13) and relative feed motion in the direction of the axis of rotation, in particular a thread-cutting and/or drilling machine, comprising a torque-controlled, reversible electric rotary drive, a torque sensor (15) which determines the current in the rotary drive, and a device which determines the resultant feed. In order to ensure that, when operating automatically with a drive of this kind, the workpiece cannot suffer damage, the invention calls for a torque-controlled feed device in which the feed power is kept at a minimum as a function of the optimum machining torque of the tool.
