The jaws for a vice are made of steel. They have rough surfaces facing the workpiece to prevent it slipping while being gripped by the jaws. There is a ceramic covering (3) or hard metal grained or diamond grained coating on the faces of the jaws (2) either partially or wholly covering them. The jaw facings (1) may be of rectangular shape. USE/ADVANTAGE - The jaws have a high compressive strength and the surface gives a multi point contact with the work object.
