The invention concerns the L-HicDH gene, DNA partial sequences of the L-HicDH gene (in particular for use as translation initiator and/or as transcription terminator for the production of gene products), expression vectors with the L-HicDH gene or the DNA partial sequences, E. coli strains for the production of L-HicDH, the enzyme L-HicDH as well as process in which this is used for the conversion of hydroxy acids into ketonic acids and vice-versa.
