PURPOSE: To obtain the subject machinable cartridge by molding a slip contg. alumina fibers, colloidal silica, an org. binder, a deflocculant or the like in a vacuum and heat treating the molding at a temp. at which the org. binder and the deflocculant are voporized. CONSTITUTION: A cylindrical hollow object which is closed at one end 13 and is opened at the other end is composed of an object which contains at least 50 wt.% alumina and/or zircon and has, in some cases, a means 9 for supporting the same by a plate 8. This object is formed by molding the slip contg. the fibers of the alumina and/or zircon of a diameter below 20μm and length below 25 mm, the colloidal silica, at least one org. binder (e.g. starch) and at least one kind of deflocculant (e.g. agar) in the vacuum. The molding is then dried and heat treated at the temp. sufficient for volatizing the org. binder and the deflocculant, by which the machinable cartridge is obtd.
