In a telegraph exchange data from one source, e.g. a keyboard, can be automatically added to data from another source, e.g. a punched tape. The embodiment described comprises a tape which, at a point at which variable data is to be added, contains special signals, e.g. a series of all-blank (No. 32) punchings. When a relay unit detects these signals it disconnects the output of the tape reader and conneots instead a store which contains variable data obtained from a keyboard. When the store is emptied the tape reader is reconnected to the line. The variable data transmitted may be added to the blank part of the tape representing the special signals.
