A medical mattress 1 and mattress cover 4 are disclosed, the mattress cover comprising a vapour-permeable support portion 5 and vapour permeable discharge portion 6. Preferably the permeability coefficient of the discharge portion is much greater than that of the support portion so that water vapour passing into the cover from a user is discharged, the user and mattress remaining substantially dry. Each vapour-permeable portion may comprise a vapour permeable film 7, 9, supported on a textile fabric 8, 10. In a second embodiment the mattress is provided with bearers 16 defining passageways and the cover has means 17, 18 for passing a flow of air through the cover. This embodiment is suitable for use on an impermeable mattress support. The upper and lower portions 5 and 6 of the cover may be releasably joined together by an air-tight sliding clasp fastener 11 which can be protected by a waterproof flap 12 constituted by a marginal part of upper portion 5. The lower edge of flap 12 can be releasably attached to lower portion 6 by means of VELCRO (RTM) strips 13, 14. The term "vapour permeable" means impermeable to air and to liquid water, but permitting the passage therethrough of water vapour. <IMAGE>
