Process for preparing low-calorie chewing-gum compositions consisting of a gum base having an enhanced hydrophilic nature. In one aspect, the invention provides a process for the preparation of a saliva-stimulating low- calorie chewing-gum composition in which the composition is formed by (A) a gum base having an enhanced hydrophilic nature present in a quantity of between approximately 40% and 75% by weight of the chewing-gum composition, (B) an expander agent present in a quantity which is less than or equal to approximately 60% by weight of the chewing-gum composition, (C) an effective quantity of a sweetener, and (D) a homogeneous mixture of a hydrophilic polymer present in a quantity of at least approximately 1.5% in an anhydrous vehicle. In another aspect, the invention provides a process for the preparation of a chewing-gum composition with a filled centre having an outer shell which encloses a cavity and a liquid centre within the cavity, in which the outer shell consists of a gum base having an enhanced hydrophilic nature. In yet a further aspect, the invention relates to a chewing-gum composition coated with a confectionery product having a central portion of a covering of confectionery product on the central portion in which the central portion consists of a low- calorie gum base having an enhanced hydrophilic nature.
