Floating sewage treatment apparatus comprises a vessel (10), a first inlet (12) through which sewage may be introduced to the vessel for treatment and an outlet (14) disposed a first predetermined distance above the bottom of the vessel so that treated liquid may be discharged from the vessel when the surface (24) of the liquid reaches a predetermined level (L). A second inlet below the outlet level admits water of a mass (20) in which the apparatus floats, valve means (22) keeping the inlet (18) normally closed and opening it to admit water only when the surface (24) liquid in the vessel (10) is at least a second predetermined distance (D) below the surface (S) of the water (20) in which the apparatus floats. The outlet (14) may empty into a discharge chamber (44) from which the liquid (48) is pumped by a pump (46) to be discharged into the water (20).
