APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR DETECTING ICE

PURPOSE: To correctly detect existence and/or a thickness of ices by a method wherein a detection of ices on a detection face or directly adjacent thereto is made, based on an amplitude of a reflection pulse. CONSTITUTION: An ultrasonic pulse source transmits an ultrasonic pulse to a surface 26 of a detector 10, existence of ices on the detector surface 26 is decided from an amplitude of a pulse reflected by the detector surface 26. The amplitude of a pulse reflected by the detector surface 26 is compared with an easily adjustable threshold amplitude. The detector surface 26 is arranged so as to detect a thickness of ices on an external surface 18 of an aeroplane like other airframe components like surfaces of wings, an airframe or an inlet surface of an engine.
