PURPOSE: To obtain a composition, comprising an ointment base, a gel or a film containing a mixture of a specific amount of estrogen with a water- insoluble vinylpyrrolidone copolymer and useful for sustained transdermal application. CONSTITUTION: This composition comprises an ointment base, a gel or a film containing a mixture of estrogen (e.g. estradiol or an ethynylestradiol ester) in an amount of 0.01-1wt.% based on the total weight of the composition with a water-insoluble vinylpyrrolidone copolymer containing at least 10wt.% vinylpyrrolidione. The copolymer is obtained by copolymerizing the vinylpyrrolidone with an ester of an unsaturated acid selected from (meth)acrylic acid, crotonic acid and maleic acid or a vinyl or an allyl ester of an aliphatic, araliphatic or an aromatic carboxylic acid.
