[Also in Division B4] In a method of sealing a spigot and socket pipe joint located at the bottom of an excavation, a flexible expendable shroud or mould 50 is circumferentially wrapped with overlapping edges around the joint, which has been previously chemically or abrasively cleaned, such as by sand-, grit, wheat- or refractory-blasting or wire-brushing, from a position remote from the joint, Figs. 8-16 (not shown), first and second portions 51 and 53 of the shroud are clamped about the socket and spigot respectively by flexible steel straps 80 and 81, and a sealant is injected through a tube 65, Figs. 1 and 6 (not shown), in an intermediate shroud portion 52 into an annular cavity 90 defined between the shroud and the joint. As shown, the shroud is used to seal leakage through a jute and lead caulked joint in pipe line below the surface by an operator at the surface; The three shroud portions may be formed integrally or, as shown, by three connected sections and may be of rubberized fabric, foamed rubber linings 57 being provided on the first and second shroud portions. The shroud is first lowered and manipulated about the excavated joint, Figs. 8-11 (not shown), and retained by a coil spring 70 in position. Flexible steel bands are then strapped around the shroud to clamp it permanently in position, Figs. 13-15 (not shown). Sealant is then injected from a pump 118 through a connecting conduit 103, Fig. 16 (not shown), until a pressure gauge 123 or other means indicates that the cavity is filled. The connecting conduit is disconnected, tied to prevent leakage, and dropped into the excavated hole. The sealed joint is then reburied. A small plastic flap 62, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), enables air to escape from the intermediate shroud portion on injection of the sealant.
