Externally heated thermal cracking tubes, having flattened or compressed round crosssectional configurations, are disposed so that the major axes of their cross-sections confront the heat source. The tubes may have oval or elliptical cross-sections with a minor axis to major axis ratio of 01 to 0-7, a major axis of 100-500 mm., a minor axis of 30-150 mm., and a length of up to 70 m. Naphtha-steam mixtures, preheated to 600‹ C., are cracked to yield an exit gas having a temperature of 750-950‹ C., and comprising methane, ethylene, propylene and 1,3-butadiene. Other suitable hydrocarbon feeds are ethane, propane, butane, kerosene and light and heavy gas oils. |
