In the case of the two-pole earth-contact plug socket, an operating element which is arranged in the centre of the plug socket and acts on a switch ensures that the plug socket is floating when the plug is withdrawn. The connection of a commercially available plug socket base (4) and of a commercially available fast-switching snap-action switch (1) to a common assembly enables a particularly simple construction of a waterproof plug socket. A plunger (2) which is inserted in the plug-in receptacle (3) is effectively connected to the end (9) of a plug (6) so that the switch (1) switches during insertion and withdrawal of the plug as long as the plug pins (7) are still located in a deep position in the plug sockets (19). In consequence, the plug socket is also suitable for a region where there is an explosion hazard.
