The purification and making parallel of the plant stalks arranged transversely in a layer, such as a flax windrow, is produced by combing on a platform (2) of the two sides of the layer in succession whilst overlapping the combing region at the centre. The layer is strongly held by endless belts (3s), (3i) then, after loading of the folding region by the belts (4s), (4i) during the combing carried out by the combs (11) with wide teeth (12) driven by endless chains or belts (13) winding around gears or pulleys (13p), and guided in their orientation by a cam (15), whose the points of penetration into the layer are offset and come together progressively to a gap sufficiently small to eliminate all foreign bodies, the lightest being entrained by an air flow channel through a casing (10) and openings (19) (18), which sweeps through the layer, from the centre towards the outside, in the region and substantially in the same direction as the combing. The oblique direction of the combing with respect to the layer, linked to the synchronisation of the speed of the combs and the speed of the layer, allows the teeth of the combs to pass through the layer perpendicularly, with respect to their point of penetration into the layer. <IMAGE>
