PURPOSE:To reduce character pitch data to be stored in a printing controller by a method wherein a plurality of character pitch data with respect to the type or size of character to be printed are calculated from the ratio of a resolving power as a reference of stored character pitch data to a resolving power of a device in use. CONSTITUTION:With the reception of printing data from an external equipment 1, a resolving power of a target printer, e.g. 180 DPI, is read from a CG font header part 5a of a CG (character generator) ROM 5. Next, a resolving power of a device in use stored on a system ROM 4, e.g. 240 DPI, is read. The ratio of these resolving powers is calculated. In this case, the ratio of the resolving power of the target printer to that of the device in use is approximately 1.333. Character pitch data for a specified character type or size are sequentially read from the CG font header part 5 and multiplied by the resolving power ratio 1.333, whereby character pitch data based on the resolving power of the device in use is calculated and stored in a corresponding memory area of a CG font data table 6a. |
