Vice, intended particularly for machine tools and more precisely for machining centres, including a base which carries a fixed jaw, an operating piece which can move longitudinally with respect to the base and carrying a movable jaw, the movement of the operating piece being controlled by a clamping member, characterised in that the clamping member (3) bears via one of its ends (3a) on a longitudinal stop piece (12) of the base (1) and at its opposite end (3b) on a projecting part (2a) of the operating piece (2), and in that the axis of the clamping member is situated on the opposite side from the axis of application of the clamping force between the jaws, with respect to the axis of inertia of the assembly, so as to apply, between the stop piece (12) and the projecting part (2a) of the operating piece (2) a force which tends to balance out the clamping force between the jaws, and which is therefore an antagonistic couple. <IMAGE>
