NEW MATERIAL:Compounds having an optically active gamma-lactone ring of formula I [R<1> is formulae II-IV (n and e are 0 or 1; R<3> is 1-15C alkyl or 2-15C alkenyl which may contain asymmetric carbon atom respectively; X and Y are H, halogen or cyano); R<2> is 1-15C alkyl or 2-15C alkenyl which may contain asymmetric carbon atom respectively; * is asymmetric carbon atom]. EXAMPLE:A compound of formula V. USE:Useful for a display element and an opto-electronic element. PREPARATION:An optically active gamma-lactone compound of formula VI is reacted with CH3I in a basic condition.
