With centreless grinding machines the initial pressure between the grinding wheel and the workpiece is usually so great that the frame of the grinding machine is distorted leading to inaccuracy in the finished workpiece. This problem is usually overcome by continuing the grinding operation for a sufficient time to allow forces causing the distortion to disappear so that a relatively long time is required to grind a workpiece. This problem is overcome by carrying out the grinding operation in two stages so that the initial force between grinding wheel and workpiece is reduced with consequent reduction in the distortion of the machine frame.
