PURPOSE: To obtain a blood glucose-lowering agent for or an agent for treating a patient afflicted with diabetes mellitus that contains a therapeutically effective glucose-lowering amount of a specific compound such as bis(3,5-tert-butyl-4- hydroxyphnylthio)methane. CONSTITUTION: A compound of the formula (R1 -R4 are each a 1-6C alkyl), preferably bis(3,5-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphnylthio)methane, is used as a blood glucose- lowering agent for or an agent for treating a patient afflicted with diabetes mellitus by administering to said patient a therapeutically effective glucose lowering amount of the compound generally about 1-5mg/kg/day, preferably about 1-500mg/kg/day, orally or parenterally, preferably orally thereby lowering the blood glucose of the patient to retard or prevent the diabetes mellitus and the complications with the diabetes caused by the hyperlipemia relating to the diabetes.
