A vacuum or other switch or gap device comprises a cup-shaped electrode having a reentrant lip portion around its mouth so that an arc formed between the cup and a second electrode is confined within the cup by electromagnetic forces. The electrodes may be shaped so that the arc is initially formed off-centre to assist in the electromagnetic effect, and an external coil may be arranged around a housing for the device. Either or both of the electrodes may have spiral slots to cause rotation of the arc around the axis of the device. Both of the electrodes may be cup-shaped. |
