The invention concerns a method of treating the biological quality of water, particularly freely occurring water, for example in ponds. Freely occurring water is treated at least once a year with 3-cyclohexyl-5,6-trimethyluracil or tert- 3-butyl-5-chloro-6-methyluracil in a quantity of 20 to 500 micrograms/l, preferably in the form of a preparation containing these substances.
