The method is based on the fact that an electrically conducting material is subjected in melted form to a mixture of potassium or sodium fluorotitanate in a quantity of 0.5 to 10 mol. %, potassium or sodium borofluoride in a quantity of 1 to 70 mol. % and halogenides of alkaline metals or metals of alkaline earth such as potassium fluoride, sodium fluoride, lithium fluoride, potassium chloride sodium chloride or lithium chloride in a quantity of 20 to 98 mol. %, whereas the molar ratio of boron to titanium is greater than 2. The process occurs at constant cathodic potential of -0.5 to -1.5 against the graphite electrode at a temperature greater than the temperature of primary crystallisation of the smelt. This layer of TiB2 increases the hardness and corrosion-resistance of the materials.
