In apparatus for determining the resistance to friction of a strip of material the strip of material 16 is passed through slits 14, 15 of an eccentrically mounted drum 16 and held there by a spring-loaded arm 20. On rotation of the drum the strip is abraded against a rubbing element 26 mounted by a bracket 25 on a pivotable arm 22. In operation, two or more strips are successively mounted on the drum which is rotated a counted number of times, the direction of the strips being reversed each time. The damage is compared in each case and the fibre direction may be determined in the case of a fibrous material. The load applied by arm 22 may be altered by adding weights. The positions of the rubbing element and the strip may be reversed, and the rubbing action may be continuous rather than intermittent. |
