The invention relates to a process for splitting a mixture of fatty acid esters in order to separate the esters with differing degrees of unsaturation. The process comprises (a) depositing the mixture of esters directly on a highly acid ion exchange resin bed permuted in the form Ag<+>, (b) causing a methanol-based solvent to percolate through the resin bed to elute the saturated and mono-unsaturated esters, (c) where necessary, causing an ethanol-based solvent to percolate through the resin bed to detach and elute the di-unsaturated esters, (d) then using a final elution solvent including a nitrile or an alkene or an alkyne of the aliphatic type to detach and elute the remaining esters and (e) extracting the esters contained in each of the solvents, especially by evaporating the solvent concerned. The invention is especially applicable to the separation of methyl esters from borage, onager, woad, sysimber oils, etc., to separate the linoleate and linolenate from these mixtures. |
