A process for the halogenation of phthalocyanines comprises reaction between a halogen, gaseous at the reaction temperature, and the phthalocyanine contained in a liquid medium which may be chlorobenzene; phthalyl chloride; stannous titrachloride; titanium tetrachloride; titanium tetrabromide; silicon tetrachloride nitrobenzene or chlorides or bromides of Group (IV) metals and semi-metals. The reaction is performed at a temperature higher than the boiling-point of the medium at atmospheric pressure and at a higher pressure than the vapour pressure of the medium at the reaction temperature. The reaction may be carried out at 120 DEG to 250 DEG C. at 2-40 atmos. with 3-40 parts by weight of medium to 1 part of phthalocyanine. Examples refer to the production of copper chlorophthalocyanine; bromochlorophthalocyanine; iron chlorobromophthalocyanine; copper bromochlorophthalocyanine. Products are obtained as powders by distilling off the volatiles and may be purified by admixture with oleum and precipitated by addition of water.ALSO:In chemical reactions between at least one reactant gaseous at the reaction temperature and a reactant dissolved or suspended in a medium which is liquid under the reaction conditions, the gaseous reactant is introduced into, or formed within, a reactor containing said dissolved or suspended reactant, and having a reflux condenser, the temperature being higher than the boiling point of the medium at atmospheric pressure and the pressure being higher than the vapour pressure of the medium at the reaction temperature. The escape of gases from the condenser may be controlled by a valve operated in accordance with the pressure in a contact manometer by means of a magnetic valve determining the supply of air to said pneumatic valve. The above process may be used for the halogenation of phthalocyanines (see Division C4). The medium may be inert or may take part in the reaction. |
