Cycloalkanes are obtained by hydrogenating benzenes in the trickle phase under pressure at below 200 DEG C. in a single reactor comprising a plurality of parallel tubes 20-70 mm. internal diameter and 2-8 m. long surrounded by a boiling, cooling liquid (preferably water) and containing a noble metal catalyst, recycling 1-8 parts by weight of the product per part of fresh benzene and adjusting conditions so that the product contains at least 99% of hydrogenated aromatic hydrocarbon. The hydrogen pressure may be 20-100 atm. and the preferred catalyst is supported ruthenium. The hydrogenations of benzene and toluene are exemplified. |
