PURPOSE:To improve safety at running of a vehicle by computing relative speed between front and rear wheels from output of wheel rotating speed detectors provided on respective front and rear wheels, and judging generation of hydroplaning through comparison between the relative speed and a relative speed threshold value. CONSTITUTION:Sensors 6 as wheel rotating speed detectors are respectively provided on the front wheels 2 and the rear wheels 5, in a four-wheel drive vehicle in which torque generated in an engine 1 is transmitted to the front wheels through a transmission and a front differential and to the rear wheels from the transmission through a center differential 3 with a differential limiting device and a rear differential 4. Output signals of respective sensors 6 are input to a computing device 9, mean speed of right and left front wheels and of right and left rear wheels are computed, and relative speed between the front and rear wheels is obtained by substraction from these mean speeds. This relative speed is compared with a relative speed threshold value, and when the relative speed is over the threshold value, generation of hydroplaning is judged and an alarm lamp 10 is lighted.
