PURPOSE:To cool a high temp. metallic strip quickly without generating shape defects by flowing a temp. controlled gas into the hollow part in a cooling roll thereby cooling the metallic strip. CONSTITUTION:In a hollow cooling roll 2 for cooling a metallic strip 1, air is mixed with the waste gas discharged from the heating zone or the like of a continuous treatment line for the strip and the temp. is controlled so as to maintain the temp. difference at which the generation of the shape defects of the strip is obviated, thence the gas is flowed into the roll 2 through an inlet 4, whereby the strip 1 is cooled. In order to improve the heat transfer of the roll 2, an inside cylinder 7 supported by supports 8 is provided in the roll 2 and the gas is flowed near the inside wall of the roll 2. Also fins 6 or heat pipes 11 sealed with a heat medium 10 which evaporates at high temp. and condenses and liquefies at low temp. are disposed on the inside wall. |
