A process for the partial hydrogenation of a gasoline containing gum-forming unsaturated hydrocarbons, and which has been produced by a thermal cracking process, e.g. operated at 590-900 DEG C., so that substantially all the sulphur present is in the form of thiophene rings, comprises partially hydrogenating the gasoline at 0-200 DEG C. in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogen, without recycle of the hydrogen, at a hydrogen treating rate of less than 300 SCF/B, and with an excess of hydrogen over that consumed of less than 50 SCF/B. The pressure may be 0-1000 p.s.i.g., and the space velocity 0.5-10 v/v/hr. The catalyst may be a Group VIII metal, for example nickel, which may be present predominantly as metal in an amount of 1-50% wt., supported on a refractory oxide carrier, for example alumina, a clay mineral, or a siliceous mineral such as kieselguhr. The preferred carrier is sepiolite (meerschaum). Specification 848,232 is referred to. |
