Amines of the general formula R 1 R 2 R 3 N in which R 1 is a saturated or unsaturated C 6-22 aliphatic radical, R 2 and R 3 are H or C 1-4 alkyl radicals are obtained by reacting complete or part a fatty acid glyceride of general formula in which R 4 is a fatty acid residue having from 6-22 C atoms or H, with the proviso that at least one R 4 residue is a fatty acid residue with ammonia or an amine of the general formula R 2 R 3 NH at a temperature of 200-400‹ C. and a hydrogen pressure of 50-400 atmospheres in the presence of an oxidic Zn-Al or Zn-Cr catalyst in lump form. The process is preferably carried out continuously at 200-350‹ C. and a pressure of 100-300 atmospheres. In the examples coconut oil, hydrogenated beef tallow and unhardened beef tallow are reacted with NH 3 , methylamine or dimethylamine in the presence of hydrogen over Zn-Al oxide or Zn-Cr oxide catalysts. |
