In a power-assisted steering unit for motor vehicles a distributing valve 3 is disposed within a piston 2 working in a cylinder 1 arranged in a steering column and is coupled by a screwthread with a steering shaft 12 so that rotation of the steering shaft causes rotation of the valve 3 to supply fluid to either end of the cylinder 1 through one of passages 25, 27 in the piston. Fluid from a pump is supplied to a space 15 around the piston 2 through an inlet 14 (Fig. 3) and passes through a bore 17 to a groove 19 in a control sheath 18 surrounding the piston 2. When the valve 3 is in mid-position fluid flows equally through spaces 22, 23 around the valve 3 to a groove 29 in the control sheath 18 communicating via a bore 31 in the valve 3 and bores 33, 34 in the steering shaft 12 with a return space 13 in the steering column. When the valve 3 is rotated ribs 3a thereon are displaced relatively to the grooves 19, 29, whereby fluid is supplied to one of the passages 25, 27 through one of bores 24, 26 while the other of the passages 25, 27 is connected with the return space 13. Pistons 35, 37 (Fig. 4) are urged against a nose 41 on the valve 3 by springs 42 and by the fluid pressure in the space 15 to return the valve 3 to mid-position and to provide " feel." The piston 2 is linked by means of a rod 6 and a crank 5 to a steering shaft 4. |
