Incremental length measurement system for machine tools - has scale carrier with incremental track, two parallel reference tracks, sensing and evaluation devices

An incremental length measurement system contains a scale carrier (1) with incremental (2) and parallel reference (4) tracks. Reference marker intervals corresp. to their absolute distances from a null position. The tracks are sensed by a device movable w.r.t. the scale carrier, and connected to an evaluation device. A second, preferably similar reference track (6) parallel to the incremental and first reference tracks has marker (7) separations in one group pref. the same as the first reference track but variable from group to group. USE/ADVANTAGE - For relative position measurement, e.g. in machine tools, and absolute measurement over practically any length.
