A programmable memory controller contains a master assembly (1) connected to slave assemblies (2, 3) via a parallel bus (4). The slaves are connected to each other via a serial bus (9) and one slave acts as master for serial bus communications. The slave assemblies can be activated via the serial bus by a signal placed on the serial bus by the master assembly. The serial bus contains a line (10) and an earth line (10) for communications between the slaves and master. USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables parallel bus independent data communications between slaves at minimal cost.
