[Also in Division G6] Uranium dioxide nuclear fuel is purified by halogenation (e.g. chlorination), suspension in a melt of molten alkali metal halides, and fractional precipitation of the UO 2 nuclear fuel from the melt by reduction of the halogenation product in two or more steps e.g. by a hydrogennoble gas mixture. The fuel may be oxidized before or after halogenation. A. first precipitate is preferably # 1% of the uranium, and a second precipitate is # 98% of the uranium. Between precipitations, different phases may be separated by decantation. Preferably the crude UO 2 . is added to a NaCl/KCl melt. A continuous stream of inert gas is fed throughout the subsequent steps of oxidizing any fission products with oxygen to the higher valency state, adding chlorine to form UO 2 Cl 2 and volatilize Ru and Te, and adding hydrogen to precipitate the UO 2 . |
