ANTIVIRAL COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING SULFOQUINOVOSYL GLYCEROL DERIVATIVES AND ANALOGS THEREOF AND METHODS FOR USING THE SAME

Antiviral compositions useful for inhibition of the cytopathic effects of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which is implicated as a causative agent of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), include a new class of HIV-inhibitory compounds, the sulfonic acid-containing glycolipids. The pure compounds were active against HIV in cultured human lymphoblastoid CEM, MT-2, LVD-7 and C3-44 cell lines as indicated by the tetrazolium assay, as well as by correlative p24 viral protein and syncytia formation assays.
