REVERSE INSTALLATION TYPE VARIABLE DAMPING FORCE SHOCK ABSORBER VARIABLE OF DAMPING CHARACTERISTICS BOTH FOR BOUDING AND REBOUNDING STROKE MOTIONS

A reverse mounted shock absorber has a cylinder tube 26 coaxially arranged within a strut tube 24 for defining therebetween an annular reservoir chamber 266 and an upper reservoir chamber 268 which is separated from the annular reservoir chamber. A first fluid path is defined for permitting fluid flow from the upper cylinder chamber 262 to the lower cylinder chamber 264 via the annular reservoir chamber 266 in response to bounding stroke of vibration. A second fluid path is defined for permitting fluid flow from the lower cylinder chamber 264 via the annular reservoir chamber 266 to the upper reservoir chamber 268, in response to rebounding stroke of vibration. Pressure-responsive damping valves (424 and 414, Fig 3) are respectively disposed in the first and second fluid paths, and a rotary valve 404 may allow variable damping.
